it is not the cleanest of engines as the brown colour is varnishing from the oil, but you can see the moving bits.

    Bye for Now!

Just realised why your engine is noisy, looks like somebody has adjusted your tappets with a 6" ruler!

sorry Graham, i am still a little paranoid, LOL!

humour has been hard to come by today. but i feel it kicking in, in the form of excessive units.
and i think there maybe more units to come tonight!

    Hi Guys.

Sorry if this is a really ignorant question...but is this the same layout for the n/a V6?
Would like to know before I crack out the socket set, because my engine is currently tapping like a b*****d on idle, but goes away on high RPM, and reading up on here, seems likely that it has thrown a rocker arm.
I should imagine it would be the same setup, but forewarned is forearmed I guess...
    Cheers!

No David, it isn't the same layout. N/A V6 is a SOHC - so has only one camshaft which is operating 12 valves. The noise could be from worn tappets, rather than from a defective rocker arm.

Anyhow, making an engine oil flush and use a different oil can help to cure this and might be a cheaper fix then change the tappets... But it's no guarantee, so don't count me on that.

    Do it all yourself.

Not sure what the best thing to do in your case is it looks like it needs a steam clean, lol. But don't do that.

If you do try and clean it be carefull you don't block up the oil ways in the engine with debris from cleaning,

I bought the car with a buggered front turbo, and had the turbo repaired but when i bought the car a few months back it was not running and was bought at auction at what i thought was an ok price. It would have been ok if the engine wasn't in such a sorry state. Sadly its been neglected (not by me) and now need lots of love care and tedious attention to details.

I am going to take the oil pan off if i am able to and then begin a cleaning process to try and remove all the sludge from the engine. I was going to use diesel to scrub all the bits that i can get at and try to desolve all the tar that i can as much as possible. I was thinking to also run some engine flush through the car when its all back together and then drop the oil not long after doing that also.

I was considering also taking the heads off and cleaning them and also replacing the valve stem seals as i suspect they are not in great shape.

I think I will run a compression check also on all the cylinder today in case there is a loss of compression on any of the cylinders.

I am open to all ideas on how to clean this mess out of the engine. I even have contacted a engine reconditioning place but I know they will tell me its about a million dollars to fix so i am not all that keen on that approach. I could take the heads and black to them and have them do the clean and other things i cant do.

The other issue is that the timing belts got grit all over it and I have no idea when its been replaced so its looking like i will need to do that and the water pump at the same time. Of course that leads to new hoses and leads also

anyway its going to be a bigger job than I had hoped for.

Yes i am going to removed the engine totally and have the heads dipped. I can not clean the rockers covers enough without doing it that way as they have a hidden area where the manifold vaccume hoses connect. Its impossible to clean inside that unless its in some sort of bath. I suspect there will be other ares in the engine that are similar. The engines simply has to come out now and be stripped cleaned checked and rebuilt,

It will be a bit of a beastie once done though, so i guess its worth the effort. My next issue once its done will be finding a place to store it once its completed because I am going away for a year.

    Nope.
You have picture of just 1 head.
Each head has got 12 lifters: 6 per camshaft or in other description 4 per cylinder (2 intake and 2 exhaust)
    Ex: Galant VR4
Running 268 HP ATW and 443 Nm torque at 0.9 bar
    Now: Lancer Evolution 8 FQ-300
Running 325 HP ATW and 510 Nm torque at 1.6 bar
