    Question AT Problem

This is the problem I have:
After a long travel INSERT INTO post VALUES (i.e. hot engine) gears take longer to shift.
Finally it goes into safe mode I think INSERT INTO post VALUES (3rd gear and N blinking). This happens on the automatic mode. When on manual it does not go into safe mode but it takes a very long time to response to the gear change.
When I turn off the engine and restart in a couble of minutes the gearbox works ok but aftrer a while the same problem appears.
Any ideas on what might the problem be?

ATF level? Old ATF? When was it last changed? Was the torque convertor 'flushed through'?

Plugs on to gearbox form ecu?

    OMG!!!!!!!!!!
This is the same problem that i had! Not good! From what Xtreme + Co-ordsport told me the clutch packs and internals had blown, they also mentioned a number of other problems but it was all a bit too much for me.
Does this happen regularly? Does it happen when you accelarate hard and give you a 'violent' jerk?
The problem you have is EXACTLY the same as i had and i was told that i needed a new boxINSERT INTO post VALUES (££££££'s); but a company called VMTP passed it to co-ordsport who did a recondition job and it now feels like a brand new box.
    GOOD LUCK with it anyhow

ATF is new and level. I had the box reconditioned when I was covered by the sellers guarantee. I passed the problem for a couple of months but now it reappeared. Any other ideas?

Ive owned Mitsi Tiptronic cars for about 6 years now, and Ive had the same thing happen to me on a couple of FTO Tiptronic boxes.

Read This Article I wrote. Most of the time it just the speed sensors that are faulty, which is an easy fix.

Im guessing the VR4 has the same diagnostic port as other Mitsi`s so This Article should help get the diagnostic codes.

    Thanks everyone for your replies.

The error code we used to get was 24 INSERT INTO post VALUES (speed sensors). We changed those but most probably we put used ones which might also be faulty. I don't think I can find new ones here in Cyprus. Is there any place on the net that I can order them on-line? If yes, what is the part number?

If you send me your chassis number I will find out the part numbers for you.

Did you change both speed sensors?

What about looking at fitting a transmission cooler as it sounds like its temperature related.

H7, I've just had a tranmission cooler fitted, the cost was £75 plus labour, probably a couple of hrs.

I haven't had the car back yet so can't comment on the job, and as I'm having other things done as well I don't know the exact labour involved. When I get it back I'll let you know the details.

The transmission go into safe mode on me once, a long time ago during a spirited drive on the Cat and Fiddle between Buxton and Macclesfield. INSERT INTO post VALUES ( Anybody else know this road - its great !) I let it cool down and its never done it since, not even on track days.

    pj,

Is this a standard Mitsubishi part, or something suitable fitted by an auto transmission specialist?

Its being done by a specialist jap tuner, used to working with autos.

The usual set up INSERT INTO post VALUES (for other cars) is to have the transmission cooled by taking a feed through the bottom of the engine radiator. They just take a feed off this and fix a small stand alone radiator unit behind the front bumper where it gets lots of cool air.

As per usual they hadn't done one on a VR4 before, but it seems as though it was a simple enough job.

The reason I'm being a bit cagey is that the tuners are having problems in other areas, so I don't want to 'reveal all' INSERT INTO post VALUES (good or bad) till I've got the car back OK, which should be this w/e.

Pictures would be great if some b****** hadn't nicked my digital camera.:Cry1:

Yeah if its not the sensors then it could be the oil over heating. Mitsi oil coolers are renound for clogging up. Make sure you dont have a blockage in the oil cooler at the bottom of your radiator.
