    Slipping on boost?

    Hi guys,

Not sure if anyone can help but iv got a 97 vr4. Upgraded front mount and hks style ssqv on an adapter on the standard piping.
When I go uphill and sit on around 5psi it does this sort of drop for like a split second every few moments like somethings slipping or cutting out. Has anyone had or heard of this before? Its fine when im not on boost or under 3 psi but does it between 5 and 7psi.

Just want to check if there is a common thing like a loose pipe or sumn?

    Cheers!

What sort of speed/revs are you doing at the time? Is it an auto? Sounds like it is probably just the torque converter locking/unlocking.

Make sure you are using the correct ATF too - the wrong fluid can cause the transmission to do this.

Yea when I bought it it had a shudder when running at 50km/h. Had the trans flushed and synthetic added. Cost me 350 bucks. Next will be the ayc if the converter doesnt give up

Agree with above, you need to answer this question.
Just because the ATF was names does mean it is any good.
It has got to be the correct stuff, otherwise changing it will fix nothing.
    SPIII compliant not denton III.

Looked at the invoice but it doesnt state the product used. Ill ask the guys who did it tomorrow.
Flush was $268 and sythetic addative $100.
When I talked to him he knew it was common for torque converter to clap out on them so seemed like he may know his **** lol.

Also another question, will FL headlights fit PFL?

When I got my car the trans had been flushed - they said they used Dex-III with an additive. I had to get all the fluid out and pay Mitsubishi for a proper flush (not cheap!).

Dex-III with an additive isn't a replacement for the proper fluid - if that's what they have done, then they need to fix it ASAP. Also if the trans is damaged from their incompetence, then that should also be on them.

The only semi-common thing with these transmissions is the torque converter seal leaking, not the TC itself going.

Torque converters don't "clap out " in our cars so he is talking incompetent nonsense. Adding synthetic additive is also showing incompetence so tell him it's as stupid as adding diesel to the petrol tank and get your money back and take it to someone who knows how to do it. Or do it yourself, there is an excellent article on how to do it in the members section.

I think it cost me about $350-400 from memory - best to ask them. I knew the guys at my local dealership quite well so they gave me discounts due to the business I gave them (long story).

The slipping should stop with the new fluid - I dumped mine within 1000km and have no ill effects 50,000km later. It depends on how long it's been since it was done and the condition of the trans before the fluid goes in.

If you can get Amsoil ATF over there (it will likely cost you more, but....) then seriously consider it. Not only does it exceed SPIII spec but its a detergent based synthetic. It will clean up the crap and varnish deposited on the plates by the burnt out of spec oil (hence the start of slip) I know of no other ATF that can do this and as such it will make your box seem like it has been reborn. You will need to also flash the ECU and give it a couple of hundred miles for the fuzzy logic to settle down afterwards.
The alternatives can be very very much more expensive.
If you have a problem with getting Amsoil just contact me on 07949 944523 email don@performanceoilsltd.co.uk or web at http://www.performanceoilsltd.co.uk/

In regards to the torque converter - the only the I have heard of is them stripping the splines. That's because the have been thrashed and launched.

Which workshop did the trans flush?

Should I be rushing to the hospital to have my cars stomach pumped?
