    No speedo

OK guys, I wasn't going to tinker with this tomorrow but I got my dates wrong and my mot isn't due so I've decided after getting a win from the ayc to tackle this.

So since doing a auto to manual I've had no speedo. The revs work etc, where should I be looking?? What can I test to find out what is faulty.

It's the not the gauges as I've tried my old one and the manual clocks I got with the conversion.

There is a plug on the gearbox, very close to the transfer box. It mounts on the top surface, but the top surface is quite a long way down there so you'll have to lean in to the engine bay to get at it after you remove the intake pipework by the maf to get at it. If it worked when it was an auto but not since then I'd say the first guess is that the loom plug hasn't been seated on to the gearbox sensor properly.

That plug was initially fitted with crimp connectors, I've already swapped that out for an actual plug (as I discovered a fog light plug fits perfectly to it. Where do them two cables go? Is there a way to test if a signal is coming down them perhaps?

But cheers for the first suggestion

Could the sensor on the gearbox be knackered?

Iirc there are 3 cables? One is 12v, one is ground and the other is the signal.
The plug on the loom is the same between manual and auto?

Maybe were talking about different plugs, this one only has two wires to it. Looking into the bay with everything removed, it's directly on the top of the gearbox.

This could be the switch for reversing lights. As Nick said, check the connection from the gearbox speed sensor. You may also consult the Galant workshop manual - it should be VERY simar to the VR-4.

Just a thought, I have an abs sensor out... Front left hub I believe, would this cause my speedo to stop working?

Although the sensor was out before the gearbox change and speedo was fine as an auto

No, all variants except 2nd facelift autos use a speedo sensor in the gearbox as the only feed for the ecu and dash.

OK, ha ING poked it a few times and realised there's possibly a metal retaining clip holding it, I'm moved onto issue two while it was apart, the reverse lights don't work, so I checked the plug with continuity to the bulbs and both terminals of the bulb beep with one of the pins in the plug so I'm guessing the bit that bolts into the gearbox could be at fault...

But I'm going to put it all back together and take it for a spin

The unfortunate answer is no, that plug seems pretty damn solid and no speedo still, and annoyingly the red ayc light is back :-( checked the relay and it looks fine. Hmmm maybe it's a loose wiring connection on the pump, as it worked Friday but not today

You are spot on with the assumption about the metal retaining clip. It is the same style as the ifs sensor on the front rocker cover.

OK, so.... I'm really hoping the speed sensor is good, as that looks an absolute nightmare to access to change it.

Any more ideas on what could be stopping my speedo from working? Revs work fine.

May be worth checking even if you havent messed with it but the needle could simply be stuck. I had this fault for ages on the purple VR-4 and swapped all sorts including the speedo converter. When I got the silver VR-4 and did the coulor change on the speedo I realised that i had pushed the needle on too hard and it was sticking on the fascia. I must have pushed it on too far when I put Swinks fascia in the purple one too.

    Felt very stupid I did!!

So yeah either the speedo converter or the needle could be worth checking. (I say speedo converter because people pointed me to this when I had said fault)

OK, so today I removed the speed convertor and still, no working speedo! This is proving to be a nightmare, I have tried two sets of clocks and no speedo :-(

Could it be a faulty speed sensor in the gearbox?
