I just did the unplug the maf, the car stopped straight away. Does this mean the maf is dead?

Nope.
Start it a few times with the maf unplugged. Mostly that will get it to a point where it will run but not always. It might just mean that your cams/fuel pump/map mean that your car won't run with the maf unplugged. It might also mean that you have a small air leak somewhere.
Ok, does it matter if the car is warm or not? I did it after a drive home from work.
No idea. I haven't done it enough to work stuff like that out.
Unplugged the maf again today, while it was miss behaving, the car actually ran better without the maf attached. Ofcourse it wouldn't rev.
Colin, I have a good spare MAF which I can lend you for testing if you want?
