    Alternator

    Hi

My alternator has gone and then I was ripped off by a bloke who took my money and never sent the part. I need to get the dam thing out and try fix it but I don't know how. Just need a break here people. So fed up this also happened while on the mot test bed so now have to pay the mot twice, moral of the story don't trust people no matter how they may seem. Any help appreciated I know there's a guide on here but not got 20 quid to join at the moment.

You have to take stuff off to get it out but the easiest way is through the wheel arch. It should be relatively obvious to work out what needs removing. Good luck, I hope your luck changes.

I find there to be a considerable amount of mutual trust on this site, I've done many deals on here with PayPal gift option and never had a problem.

Did you buy the alternator from a member on here?

No it was from someone else I shouldn't have trusted. I have managed to get a second hand one now as a new one is now out of reach due to loosing the cash, so a guide to fitting one would be great.

In short: remove the wheel (steering wheel side), then remove the plastic bit you see now. Undo the belt (duh), loosen the alternator and the metal bracket it is/was bolted to. Now you have just enough space to wiggle it out. If not, loosen up the upper engine mount and jack up the engine to the 'other' side to get just a tad more clearance. It's always a bit of struggle but getting it out usually goes within a few minutes, getting the replacement back in some minutes more (And for me the -internal- swear jar gets filled right up usually ).

If you have a little bit of time spent with spanners, you'll manage for sure!

you will get more room from removing the alternator mounting bracket and moving it out of the car( disconnect the alt totally and wedge it at the back then remove the mounting, three bolts if I remember) have done 3 of these and not had to do the engine mount yet and managed to wiggle it out easy enough
