    Tire size tollerance

I was wondering if anybody knows what the tire size tolerance is.

My VR-4 came with different tires all around. And I wonder if this could have done any damage to the drivetrain.
And I want to know for in the future.
Do I need to use 4 same tires or can I use pairs? If so within what tolerance?

Ideally you should use 4 tires the same.
But at least it should be matched pairs on an axle.

The VR4 has a permanent 4WD system, so you should run the tyre sizes front-back as close as possible.

From the factory, they come with identical sized tyres all round, and most people stick with the same size tyres front and back.

My car came with 235/45/17 on the front, and 255/40/17 on the back, which is about a 1.2% difference. I have done nearly 100,000 miles since I purchased the car, using the same sized tyres, and as yet, I have not experienced any issues with the drivetrain.

However, that's not to say that I'm not causing damage to it!

At the very least, you need identical tyres on each axle (especially the rear if you have AYC - this is very dependent on having identical size, tread depth and even pressures), and keep them as close to size front/rear as possible.

If you've purchased a car where the owner has not maintained the same tyres all round, then what other maintenance tasks have been equally skimped on?

I would always try to stay within 2%. I have seen a car destroy it's transfer box on the motorway wit a 5% difference.
