    Help! Should I buy a VR4?

Could some of you kind people stop me.

I need a new car. I do at least 12,000 miles a year - mainly motorway and fast A roads. I was going to get an Accord Type R but started looking at Galants, Sport 2.5 V6 Manual, then inevitably the VR4. Will the mpg kill me and will the service costs finish me off? Will they take highish miles? Is the autobox going to dull my senses or will it prove a selling point to my wife who is an automatic licence holder only.

Please, please tell me not to do it.

    Yours

    Steve

    Thanks Wojno and Trow

Ok, its time to be honest now, I'm currently caning a Rover Coupe VVC to death at the moment. I know, I know! I hated it as soon as I bought it. Nothing but problems. What can I say? I made a silly offer of disinterest after a test drive after liking the revvy engine, and a still sneaky admiration of its looks from certain angles, and they said yes. My wife looked at me hard and whispered "Why?".

But, it is still giving me 27mpg doing >100mph every day, a lot less than £2000 fuel bill. Also it's only 12,000 miles service interval. I had a Colt GTi over a decade ago and loved it. Thrashed it to 130,000 miles and it was still strong. It liked a sip of oil now and then and rattled a bit on top (don't they all?) but I hated the expensive 6000 service schedules, let alone every 4500.

Hence the Accord Type R selection. Reasonable economy when tootling but a bit of poke when needed. I know my heart needs something faster but my head is only just winning.

I've just checked my credit card limits - i'm fine to buy. Just seen a 2002 VR4 Saloon Auto for £14,995. I'm sure I'd get a good deal.

Help!! I cannot face another four years of my wife saying "Why?"

just my ten penneth.... from a VR4 owner of 2 years, but I would never spend that much on one. IMHO, you're better off buying a cheaper one [ £4/5K ] & having another.....cheap to r daily car.

12,000 miles per year is not a lot, some members on here do double or treble that. I for one use my van for everyday use, & my VR4 at playtime !!

Once you buy a VR4, you'll love it !! you'll want to customise, modify it, make it quicker, etc. & also, at that price, once you've bought it, you're probably stuck with it.

If I were you, I'd save myself £10K by buying a cheaper one, & use it as a plaything ! & if anything goes wrong with it, what have you lost ??

They are great cars, but not cheap to run. especially on a race track !! where, IMHO they belong !!

There is negligible difference between a pre- and post-facelift in terms of performance. You won't notice the 20hp in difference. However, the looks may be a little better for some. I like the rear lights, but not a fan of the wheel arches or split front spoiler.

Part of the money saved would be for brakes upgrades, suspension tweaks and of 17" Alloys with Goodyear Eagle F1-GS D3.

Therefore get a cheaper model and tweak it to your liking. You can even add some nice "I.C.E." like Interlec has done in his.
We work to live, and to live is to drive a VR-4, around corners at speed. But it costs see here

    Thanks all

You have helped me make a decision - its the type r. The VR4 would be just too expensive to run. I will try to leave the forum and never look back. Its for my own good.

Good look to you all and respect for your dedication.

Totally agree with what Derek (interlec) has said . I know you can pick up a 98 vr4 thats just as immaculate as a 2002 and save ya self 6 or 7 g .. The reason being that people that own these vehicles , cherish them, love , caress them , some probably sleep with them (if wife kicked em out) .
    So heres a message to 123sch ..

STOP REPLYING AND START BUYING !!!
