    Run better...?

Have full service by trusted mechanic familiar with car/mechanicals/AYC drainage
Change ALL lubricants and if poss use AMSOIL for auto box
    Change all plugs and filters
Do NOT fit cone filter - leave original airbox
Tyres are all same brand, size and tread pattern
Ensure suspension in good condition with no collapsing or broken springs
Good condition discs and pref new pads all round
Have 4WD wheel/geometry settings done by trusted technician

Then you will prob have car if decent basic state to see how good it really is...

And can then decide if car needs change...

Can you already drive it to full potential, manage the power and have it handling correctly...?

A good service is always a good starting point.

For power, the stock exhaust is restrictive at the cat and the back box. Upping the boost gives good torque increases, but the turbos run out of puff so headline power increases are tricky.
Handling, the stock suspension isn't bad IMO. Coilovers can make it stiffer but I think stiffer makes it a little less predictable at the limit. It feels good in a corner though! It also feels worse on rough roads.
Brakes - good pads should see you alright in most situations. If you are considering trackdays, then look at very very good pads or a brake upgrade. If you have a late 98 then Evo Brembos are an easy fit.
