The best thing you can do is to rewire the power supply to the bulbs.
The standard wiring takes all the power for the headlights through all the tiny wiring via the switch on the steering column!
Get yourself a moderately sized length of wire, a fuse holder and fuse, and a relay. You will want to run a permanent feed directly from the battery, through the fuse, to the relay. The relay coils themselves will be powered from the current headlight wiring. The output from the relay will go to the bulb. Also replace the ground wire with a bigger one.
Do this, and you'll get full battery voltage to the lights, and not the reduced voltage from running through all the old, small wiring, and a much better output, even with standard bulbs.
Thanks Gary very informative as usual. I'll give that a go thanks

I use a different headlight set up, but I have this installed, it comes with relays and fuse etc.
Factory headlight plug is used to trigger relay and the headlight sockets on the harness is direct feed from battery on heavier gauge wire.
With standard set up you will need one harness for low beam and one harness for high beam (one harness does a pair of lights, so one harness for low beam pair and one harness for high beam pair)
