6A13 SOHC V6 Power Output Differences

I have need to repair/replace my engine due to catastrophic failure.

Whenever I've searched for Galant parts online in the past, the website configurator sometimes offers me the choice of a 163hp or 160hp 2.5 V6 N/A engine. As far as I can tell it is differentiated between pre- and post-facelift respectively.

Before I consider buying a replacement engine, I want to confirm if I must replace like-for-like with a 160hp variant, or if an earlier 163hp variant would work?

This is probably just the difference between HP and PS, it's as close as makes no difference.

Pretty certain that most of the stuff is identical on the core engine, the main differences will be in the ancillaries, which you can swap over if necessary.

The other possibility is that it may simply be down to emissions differences as Mitsubishi struggled to keep the Galant within the rules, as evidenced by the gradual increase in O2 sensors over the model's lifespan.

The facelift engine has 4 lambda probes and still 2 pre-catalysts on the manifold. But you can always build the PFL to FL and vice versa.

Thank you for the responses gents, looks like I’d have to transfer the FL manifolds to keep the lambda sensor arrangement the same on the replacement engine

I'd swap over all your ancillaries, as you know they work right, but just swap the bare block & heads if that's where your issue is.

Once the engine is out* it could be a straightforward swap of heads if the replacement heads appear to be in good order on the donor engine, which would save having to swap over ancillaries etc. while the heads are off I can check the extent of damage to the pistons to make sure they are fit for re-use, if not then I’ll use the block and heads with my known good ancillaries.

    * what is the best approach to extract the engine?

    1. Drop the engine and gearbox in one lump out the bottom of the engine bay
    2. Drop just the engine
    3. Lift the engine from the top?

Many thanks again for your advice.

My dad always told me to never open an engine unless you're going in to fix a specific issue.

Based upon that, I'd just drop the whole new engine in, without opening it up. All the ancillaries need to come off to take the heads off anyway, so you're only making more work for yourself.

The typical way with the VR-4 is to drop engine and gearbox out of the bottom together.
