Lately I seem to have an issue with Windows Updates - wondered if you can help.

I have XP Home with SP2 and the updates initialise and download ok, but then fail to install. Any ideas mate ?

    Cheers

    Hi Pete

I have been getting the odd issue too with corrupting files mainly Broadband drivers

I now install each patch one at a time
A ball ache rebooting every time but it seems to work better

I think installing multiply patches can cause issues after the reboot and it wont apply the patches

Also I have heard some people installing MS patches needing a reboot and some people dont

Thats why I dont run MS autoupdate ....I do it when I'm ready NOT MS

Thanks mate, but already tried that. I never use autoupdate either, and have tried installing one patch at a time but still getting issues

Mmmmm have you done a defrag lately and a clean up removing all IE temp stuff

You might have a MS corrupt file which is blocking updates installing

Long shot would be to reinstall MS

For the amount they charge for their software the least they could do is produce decent code.

    Bunch of frigging muppets..........

We have loads of machines here (fortunatly only a handful of xp) and use the auto update feature without issue... Maybe it's an xp home thing.

Are you guys using cracked copies of xp?

hmm. Strange then why some of you are having problems. I'll ask about if there are any known update issues. Is it home or pro?

There are quite a few applications that require the removal of sp2 prior to installation. But you'd think their own updater (make sure you have the most up to date version) would work ok with it.

Have you checked the event ewer to see if any error codes are listed? may shed some light. If not, try removing sp2, run the updates and see what happens...

ok I've looked about and it seems there are known issues with SP2 and the auto update feature. Try uninstalling it and then run the update again...

When the updates arrive, I get a little message telling me in the system tray. If I click the icon and install from there I have no issues. (Not yet, anyway!) If I don't do that then XP tries to install them when I shut down and it has never been successful doing that. I am running SP2.

That particular feature was only introduced with SP2. You may be better setting auto update to notify and download but not install (ie the default setting which you say does work) and then install them when you're ready.

You didn't mention any errors from the event viewer. If unsure how to check this, type eventvwr in the run box.

I love auto update. I have a network with 30 ghost built workstations and some work whilst others don't ... they should be identical! Also, some need reboots with updates and some don't and the worst machine just refuses to accept any updates at all! We also hot desk so this shouldn't be user related. I have tried to sort it out but have decided it is just one of those things I need to live with.
OK, so i got a Galant (finally!), now when do the turbos arrive?
