    Exclamation Auto Gearbox/Clutch problems

My gearbox has started to need to be revved up to about 3k before the clutch would automatically bite. Now it won't engage and the neutral itght flashes (once per second) when the car is in drive. Does anyone know what the problem is and how it could be resolved?

erm, call me stupid but the auto box does not have a clutch.

have you checked for fluid on your driveway?

d3x, I thought the auto box has lots of clutches? Plus a torque convertor....? Maybe I'm stupid too!

Definitely check the fluid. Between the battery and the air funnel. Disconnect the battery, wait a minute or so, reconnect and try again if you are convinced the fluid is okay.

    Okay!! You're stupid!!

    /Joke....

The autobox in these cars has several clutches..... Under and Overdrive, front and rear shaft. They help ensure a creamy smooth shift. The INVECS-II isn't your usual slushbox!!

As Nick says.... Check fluid level and condition. Also, loss of drive seems fairly common, usually caused by one of the gearbox solenoids not working - though fortunately it's often just a loose connection to one of them - check the wires & plugs going into the gearbox.

Hi there - I have just had the same problem (at 2AM last night, while crossing a causeway!!!!)

Please tell me the answer I want to hear - that it is quick, easy and cheap to repair. I dn't want to think about sending it to Main Dealer!!!

    Thanks

It's likely to be one of the gearbox solenioids... The connectors tend to get a bit manky with age and miles, so remove them from the top of the gearbox, clean 'em up and refit

Can you get anywhere if you override 'D' and use manual gear selection?

    Question Still no drive.

    Hi,

No I can't get anything, in any combination. Nor does taking the revs over 3,500 rpm make any difference.

When the engine is runngin there is an abnormal fast ticking noise coming from the gear box.

The loss of drive happened on a country lane just after going over a small "yump", which caused the car to go light and then come down (certainly not airborne, it was only really small). Do you think it could be a broken drive shaft? That is what the main dealer though was the "only likely solution"!!! They were quite keen for me to have it towed there to be repaired.....

    I will keep looking.

Any ideas I am all ears. I will go and try cleaning the connectors first.

    Tel: 07763 233488

    Thanks!

P.s. Do you know how many connectors there are? Just in case I am missing one?

    Well, I've had no luck.

It is sitting on a main road, and after just moving house I dont have a set up to let me do any more.

Monday morning I'll be at the dealer.

I will leave an update on solution and costs for any future reference.

Well... I took the car to Mitsubishi in New Milton Hants. They spent about an hour checking it with it hooked up to the diagnostics system. Nothing was found.

The oil on the dipstick looked okay but when they drained it it was dirty and had bits in it. They "think" it is either a broken oil pump....(hmmmm!) or a broken torque convertor. They said a new box would cost £1800 + VAT.

I have taken it to "The Gearbox Specialists" in Boscombe, Bournemouth. They said they have had a few Galants through with this problem it is was always the splined shaft in the torque convertor that had broken down. A Reconditioned unit will be about £200 + VAT. Mitsubishi quoted(£6000 !!!!!! I had it doubled checked but it was still 3 times more expensive than a whole new box!)

Anyway I have been quoted about £700+VAT for them to rebuild the gear box.

I will keep the forum updated.

This is basically the same problem I had with my 95 Sports GT... so I'm opting to go Manual.. but finding a gearbox has been a bitch..Lol

Personally I think a super trick auto just has to be the way to go. Checking the fluid level and its colour must be a small price for such sophistications. As I have said before if the fluid is discoloured, never mind has bits in it; it needs changing & preferably with Amsoil ATF I would also put a filter change as an equal must. Changing to a manual is just trying to go around the problem and will cause other greater problems.
If you have a problem with getting Amsoil just contact me on 07949 944523 email don@performanceoilsltd.co.uk or web at http://www.performanceoilsltd.co.uk/

Well the only problem we've run into is finding a gearbox... we've kinda given up looking for a matching so we're going to cut the head of the auto and weld it onto the housing of a 3000GT FWD or AWD gearbox, we have both options... another option is making a template... but the 3000GT gearbox is the only gearbox we've found that is on the same side as ours so we're experimenting... will tell ya'll how it goes
