ive got 225 40 18 so far no problems. i think brind is right about the sidewalls because when ur conering the side wall gives u a better grip the lower u r the hatder the tyre is

I think the jury is out on this one !!! but, thankfully, I am pleased with my choice of wheel & tyre. and as soon as I get some pics posted, you can come to your own conclusion, as I am not currently on the run from the police, I think the 18" rims , with 35 profile tyres, will do fine for now, as regarding handling & performance.

Lomy, my dad and I were talking about lower profile tyres and bigger alloy wheels at J.A.E and we came to the conclusing that what I said was right but I can see how grip can be improved just as much as grip is lost with varying tyre profiles.
Drag cars have huge tyres on the rear which I would have thought would be to aid grip etc whereas the same setup with thin rubber would give no grip whatsoever as the rubber isn't giving.

Anyway.. you said Ha****ds so you should be bricking it! lol

Drag cars ain't exactly set up for cornering - that's where the sidewall height makes a difference.

I know your next thought will probably be something like 'but what about formula1?' but that's 'cos they have some silly regs that they have to stick to and are only allowed to run 13" wheels INSERT INTO post VALUES (or summat).

I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm learning, I could be talking out of my arse before I know but it seems logical to me.

How about people whom lower the pressure in their tyres to improve grip, surely that gives similer effect to higher profile tyres in that it gives you the flex in the side walls again?
As you go around corners the tyres are like this: /_/ for example rather than I_I with hardly any flex.
Obviously toe in and out, camber etc play an even bigger part.

Never lower your tyre pressures, your tyres will destroy themselves before your eyes, they will heat up and the sidewall will be ruined. If in doubt see a tyre proffesional who will set the pressures properly. One of the biggest things that affects good handling is wheel alignment, had mine done recently and the improvement was immense, no more squelling aroung corners and stable as well.

I always thought the Lower profile the trye the better
The tyre has less flex and doesn't try and peel off the wheel at high speed corners

Look at Topgear with that Susuki they use lots of tyre flex
Looks sometimes that its going to peel off the wheel
Plus you are using the wall for grip and thats not good

The Lower the tyre wall its doesnt flex so keeps the actual thread of the tyre on the road

going to take my car up to the local driver training ground, with the wheels and tyres I have on now, [ 205/50/16 ] & try some hard cornering. then again in a few weeks with the new set, [215/35/18 ] it's not scientific I know, but If I can tell the difference, I'll let you know.

Matrix 5 spoke alloys on order now !!! slimmer than the Fox's, and not titanium, just silver finsh. & to be fitted with 225/40/18 "upgraded " tyres ?? but they cannot confirm yet which tyres will be fitted !! should get them on thursday. [ slightly more expensive :INSERT INTO post VALUES (

You'll get better grip with 225 than you will with 205's anyway, I'm sure we agree on that.

Unlucky they don't fit, was it just that size or the whole fitment?

I think it was the whole fitment. Fox wheels not designed for Galants I suppose ?? the Matrix look ok though. PS.... my pictures should appear very shortly If they dont !! this computer is going strait thro' window !!:mad: :mad:
