    45K Service Alternatives

So. I am facing the dreaded 45k service for the purple Lugume. Xtreme will want aboot £700 quid and two days to do it. I also have the dreaded ATF drip... And I find myself wondering about alternatives....

    • I don't have a full jap service hx, so FSH is gone anyway.
    • I'll never get the money I spent/spend on the car back as they're devaluing as fast as an athletic lemming who's spotted a cliff
    • Chances are I'll be keeping the car for a loooong time
... so is it really worth my while chasing a legitimate 'stamped up service History'????

I don't want to cut corners in terms of what actually gets done, but I also don't want to waste cash that I don't have.

So does anyone have any recommendations? Any tame Mitsi specialists about?

The DIY route is out - I have too much on my plate atm to sort out without spending a couple of days with more cam belt than I know what to do with!

When I got mine, I made a commitment to myself, that I will keep this car for 10+ years.

The choice is do you buy another car and lose money by depreciation or invest money by keeping a car you like to have. I chose the latter, you should do.
We work to live, and to live is to drive a VR-4, around corners at speed. But it costs see here

mmm bit of a dilema there Bern

    I have been considering this if i cant sell the galant;

4.5K Services - use local (trusted garage)
9K/18K/36K Service - use local garage for the serviceables - but use mitsi for AYC and autobox fluid changes

cambelt services - use specialist or mitsi

what do the rest of you do (£££) in order to run these magnificant beasts with an annual milage > 12K (3 services)

I'm not considering buying another car! I'm considering not getting it serviced by mitsubishi/xtreme (Ex-ralliart)! I'm looking for garage/mechanic alternatives!

Take my VR4 away - you'd better have a big gun

My mistake. I just really don't care what it costs to service mine. It is just something that has to be done and done well.

As Derek says, you can find a good mechanic who has skills and you can trust him to know your VR-4 and he has all the Mitsubishi equipment MUT-II, etc. for diagnosing any problems.

I only have two options Ralliart NZ or a Mitsi dealer that will meet my criteria

Couldn't agree more - mine has only been to Mitsi once and that was for a recall

I use a combination of a local guy for basic stuff and various specialists for anything more involved - oh, and occasionally AP Motors of course

    And so the spending starts....

Japcrap tryres shot and scary in the wet, so 4x new 225/45/17 Eagle F1's... £378.36 (£94.59/tyre fitted) - My local Brittania were still the cheapest I could find, and about equal to mytyres once you've paid for fitting. I did look into the fleabay bloke who does Federals, but got scanty replies to emails - must be out of stock, and got fed up with them .

6x Denso Iridiums.... £82.91 - the std double platinums weren't in stock, and I need the things by monday. Anyone know for definite how much longer the iridiums last?

1x K&N Filter £46.30 (£29.57 for the filter but got a recharge kit too)

So that's £507.57 before I've even got to the service!!!!!!

I've almost decided to let Xtreme do this big service, and then find myself a tame spanner man for the rest of the car's life.

Looks like it's extra shifts for me then

I'm sure my local guy in Leicester would do it - he did my cambelt service.

Platinum and Iridium will both last a minimum of 45,000 miles and so it's somewhat irrelevant as you would change either of them at the next 45k service anyway.

Pardon my higgerance, but as I may be about to swap my V6 Sport estate for a Legnum VR4 with both sitting at about 40K miles, I am a bit concerned as to the potential next service cost on the VR4. At the moment the regular 9K services on the Sport are costing me about 150 pounds at my local Mitsi dealer. Is there something special about this service for the VR4 and also why the 2 days? I know the 54K service is a biggy and was quoted 540 pounds for my sport, but 700 for a 45K.........

There's a bit of debate about 45 vs 54k for the 'BIG' service - I think most of us are playing safe and doing the big thing at 45K - ie cambelt etc. It's the complete sheet over here - so the £700 VR4 is equivalent to your £540 V6, which sounds about right as there are a few more bits like AYC and rear diffs to take care of.

Why they want it for two days is beyond me, but I'm not bothered as I have a courtesy car. May just mean they have a lot of other work on the go at the same time.

Thanks bern, for the update. Think I am going to talk to my Mitsi dealer and see what they say about mileage and costs for the big one on a VR4 before I go see the potential buy.

I believe I can answer that one......

There's a very good chance that the last time they did a VR4's 45K service was probably on mine back in January. They quoted 1 full day, providing I got there early, which I did......

....then at 10am they rang me and asked where my locking wheel nuts were.......then in the afternoon they rang me and told me I needed a new tensioner.....which they couldn't get until two days later.....and on and on.....

It was a complete fiasco.....perhaps they remember it well and just want to avoid the hassle this time!

By the way....just for a laugh, remind Simon that the 45K requires a FULL flush of the ATF, not just the flippin sump

I thought you had the standard VR-4 wheels on your Legnum, Bern? Or am I getting confused?
