Wow, $2,829.10 for parts. Are there cheaper options?

Hi Guys, I'm hoping somebody knows of some cheaper options out there.

I just got the money together for my cambelt and decided to add Lash adjusters to the list, just picked the quote up today and it comes to $2800. Seriously thinking about selling the damn thing right now lol. But seriously I'm hoping some of you guys who have already been through this might know of other options. Bender has already suggested Bill from Ralliart so I might try and get in contact with him tomorrow. What about the 3XS lash adjusters on trademe for the GTO, will they fit our engines? Has anyone had any luck cleaning the old adjusters? I can't stand mine, when the motor is cold it sounds like it's going to blow up and even when it's warm it has the diesel sound about it (not cool), I even had a passenger comment "crap is this going to stop on us lol"

Here is the quote I got, this is all genuine Mitsubishi as I found them to be cheaper than Repco (at least for the cambelt kit anyway)

    Part Number----Description--------------------------------Qty-----Price Inc GST
    JCMD372536---R*OIL SEAL, CAMSHAFT--------------------4-------$10.58 each
    JCMD318814---R*BELT,VALVE TIMING----------------------1-------$253.00
    JCMD308593---ADJUSTER, TIMING BELT TENSIONER---------1-------$212.75
    JCMD316826---PULLEY, TIMING BELT TENSIONER------------1-------$60.61
    JCMD179597---R*PULLEY, TIMING BELT IDLER--------------1-------$71.14
    JCMD376687---ADJUSTER, ROCKER ARM LASH--------------24-------$68.40
    JCMD174560---GASKET, ROCKER COVER--------------------2-------$63.76
    JCMD178940---GASKET, ROCKER COVER SPARK PLUG--------6-------$25.13
    JCMZ690233---BELT, ALTERNATOR & OTHERS--------------1--------$35.68
    JCMD302010---WATER PUMP ASSY------------------------1--------$134.55
    JCMZ690262---BELT,P/S 6PK1060-------------------------1--------$40.79
    JCMZ101075EX 2LT SUPER LONG LIFE COOL50%------------2--------$29.18

    $2829.10 INCLUDING GST

I'm not prepared to spend that much, the most I was prepared to spend was around $11-1200

Any ideas, experience, cheaper sources etc would be greatly apreciated

The lash adjusters are well expensive! If you take them off you've got less of an issue.

it'd probably be cheaper to buy the adjusters in the uk and ship them over. £78.00 for 8 from camskill

Badger, that's a lot cheaper by the looks of it than where I went.

If I take the lash adjusters off it goes down to $1187.50, if I take everything but the base cambelt kit it's still $808.52. Ben's found a cambelt kit for $400 which is great, if I can find a set of tappets cheap enough I might be able to stay in budget which would be awesome.

How do you guys feel about the ebay lash adjusters? http://www.ebay.com/itm/MITSUBISHI-L...item43ab5916f5 after several hours searching last night I couldn't find an solid answers.

I end up getting my lifters from Repco, I can't remember what brand they were now but they are doing a great job, No tapping sound or nothing coming from them

But we got them really down in price, Paid $370 in the end, Think they wanted $550ish plus

Bender, that would be about right. I got just got a quote from Repco for $23.99 each. I wondered about the ebay lifters as they would come in even cheaper, something like $260. How did you manage to get them down to $370? I have a repco card so that equals about a 10% discount but not quite that much. How big was the hole in the end of the lifters from Repco? less than a mill or the 3mm ones?

I think they were 3mm ones but can't remember now... Used my mate trade account and somehow he got them down to that price, I guess you could try repco and see what happens, Some parts they do make alot of hell out of.

I may have to go down the Repco road, still $518 with my repco card. I'm not cheap but that's a lot of money to spend on something as ridiculous as lifters although I will if I have to.

Has anyone had any luck with cleaning their Lifters? Like in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5qKEfB4loQ When I first put Caltex Fully synthetic 5w30 oil in the sound pretty much disappeared, it realy came back with a vengeance when I used Rislone oil treatment in. I'm wondering if it didn't dislodge some crap that inevitably passed through the lifters and blocked them.

    Gidday team,

I'm having a go at cleaning the lifters, there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with them so fingers crossed. Heaps of crud came out though. So far I've done the front bank, tomorrow I will start on the rear after work.

What do you guys recommend, should I do an oil change before starting it? I've about 1200 kms on the current oil, or should I do it in a weeks time when I do the cambelt and oil seals? does it matter?

Did cleaning the lifters make a good improvement? I'm thinking of doing the same to mine.

basically there are 3 different types of lifter
    oldest type 1:-
1mm oil hole in the top of nipple
about 1mm oil hole in side of adjuster

    modified type 2:-
3mm oil hole in the top of nipple
same about 1mm oil hole in side of adjuster

    newest modified type 3:-
3mm oil hole in the top of nipple
about 2mm oil hole in side of adjuster

this is the latest type of adujuster but i have not see any of this type being used by any of the people on this forum i think suppliers are just using up stocks of the old modified type 2 which obviously do not perform as well as the newest modifiedtype 3 adjuster. mitsi would not have modified the adjust to open up the hole on the side of the it if it did not improve things.
i personally have not experienced the 3 mm top hole 2mm side hole adjusters but if i was going to buy some adjuster they woulf be the ones i would be buying.

also the rocker arm that sit on top of the adjsters are supposed to have a air bleed hole in the top of the bump where the adjuster fits into, these are usually blocked and these are usually stay blocked after cleaning unless you actually poke out the hole with a thin bit of wire.
this is where the air comes out on the bleed process so if it is blocked the air bleed precess does not work properly.

well this is the information i have gathered.

    Bye for Now!

Lifters can get noisy because they are full of crud or because the internal mechanism is damaged. I would say that if your lifters are always noisy then it is unlikely to be just crud. If they are sometimes quiet then cleaning is worth a go. It only takes a few hours so if you are doing it yourself the cost is minimal.

It made a huge difference with mine. At first they where horrendous. A few kms and they went silent. Next day after going out of town they were noisy again. I did an oil change the next day. Now they don't usually make a sound on cold start up,if they do it's for about 2-3 seconds. Occasionally they will get noisy for a minute or so and then it goes away, my thought is that now it's getting regular oil changes with the right oil it's probably cleaning itself out and every now and then a bit of crap goes through the lifters. I'm quite happy with the results and the money can be spent in other areas. I will get around to putting a new set in but at least now there's no rush. If you're on a tight budget then it's a good idea to try.

They can lose internal oil pressure overnight, hence the tapping on startup. You will find they get noisier close to oil change time too.
